EP9 Chinese names (and related awkward situations)

Honestly, who hasn’t had a hard time pronouncing foreign names? We don’t blame you if you couldn’t remember or pronounce your Chinese friends’ names. In this episode, we are going to talk about this subtle awkward social situation where the initial interpersonal interactions can be hindered by difficult-to-say names.

For our fellow Chinese (or friends from other countries), don’t be too frustrated if your American friends have a hard time learning your name. It would be the same case if you are trying to learn names from South America, Africa or other parts in Asia. Give yourself an English name can also help a lot!

For American audience, when you just meet a Chinese in a party and learns a new name, if you can’t remember, try asking him/her what that name means because every Chinese character means something. Maybe that’s where the conversation will begin!
